12 Questions to Ask Before Hiring an Interior Designer

17 November 2026 · COZ Design Studio, Nagpur

Quick answer: Before hiring an interior designer, ask to see completed homes (not just renders), a sample BOQ, the written timeline, the warranty terms, who supervises the site, and what is excluded from the quote. A good firm answers all of these clearly in the first meeting. Get two or three quotes, and compare them line by line.

Why the first meeting matters so much

You're about to hand someone ₹40 lakh or more and the keys to your new home. Portfolios all look good on Instagram. These questions help you see what's behind the photos.

About their work

  1. Can I visit a home you've completed? Renders show intent. A finished home shows delivery. At COZ Design Studio, we arrange visits to completed homes for serious clients.
  2. Can I speak to a past client? A confident firm won't hesitate.
  3. Can I see your 3D next to the finished photo? This shows how closely they deliver what they show.

About money

  1. Can I see a sample BOQ? It should list materials, brands, grades and sizes — not just "wardrobe – ₹1,80,000".
  2. What's not included in this quote? Ask for exclusions in writing.
  3. What is the payment schedule? Payments should follow work milestones, not front-load everything.

About time

  1. What's the handover date, and is it in the agreement?
  2. What happens if you're late? A clear answer here is a very good sign.

About execution

  1. Who does the carpentry, and who supervises it? A clear answer matters more than the label. At COZ, we use a mix of our own team and trusted partners, chosen by the delivery timeline and finish each piece needs — and we supervise all of it.
  2. Who is my single point of contact? One name, one number.
  3. How will I know the right materials are used? At COZ, we send material photos from site so you can match them against the BOQ.

About after handover

  1. What warranty do you give, on what, and for how long? Get it in writing.

How many quotes should you get?

Two or three is enough. More than that and the quotes blur together. What matters is comparing the BOQs item by item — board grade, hardware brand, finish — not the totals.
